Why You Need A Better Call To Action

An effective CTA is an entrepreneur’s secret weapon. It can be the trusted tool when it comes to securing those followers and converting them into paying customers. Whether you’re looking to increase conversions, leads, or sales, a badass CTA is a gateway to getting more action on your website.

Enough great CTAs, and you can turn your once-broken blog, into a business goldmine.

But, like any fad-diet, one new call to action won’t sell out your services. So how do you write call-to-actions that get clicks and secure big bills? We’ve got the four steps that will make that happen.

First, what is a Call To Action?

As a user of the internet, you’ve seen the “Buy Now,” or “Sign Up Here” button riddled across stores, blogs, and services. That is a Call To Action or CTA.

A call-to-action (or CTA) is the part of your blog, social media posts, emails, or advertisements that asks your audience to take the next step down the sales funnel. Think of it as a helpful nudge in the right direction for your potential customer.

A powerful and effective CTA is essential to driving business—without it, half of your website users and social media followers wouldn’t know what to do. Many companies struggle with this, but lucky for you, we’ve earned our stripes in the CTA category. Here are four tips on how to build a strong CTA and turn more clicks into customers. 

1. Identify the desired outcome.

The first step to building a winning CTA is to define the goal. What action do you want from your readers?

Do you want to capture leads? Do you want more customers? Are you hoping to get more traffic on your website, email list sign-ups, or purchases? Whatever the purpose is, your CTA and its accompanying copy should always support it.

CTAs can function differently across your website, social, and email, so it’s important to understand exactly what you want from this action. A CTA on your blog might be leading people to join your email list, while a CTA in your weekly newsletter might focus on driving people toward your next digital course. Whatever the choice, the focus should be specific and intentional.

2. Use action-heavy verbs. 

Great CTAs get straight to the point. They let your audience know exactly what you want them to do by using verbs that drive them toward action.

Keep it simple and tell them where they need to go next, what they should click, or why they should click it. Direct and informative CTAs have much higher click rates than their wordy and confusing counterparts.

You don’t need to be a walking thesaurus to create CTAs that are effective. Rather than using tough and complicated words, shoot for simple and empowering action verbs that every reader will resonate with. A good rule of thumb is to consider, “would I say this in my everyday life?” If the answer is no, keep it out of your next CTA.

Gunnar’s CTAs are laden with action-packed lingo. His call-to-action button consists of three words that clearly paint a picture for the user—click this button and you can literally transform your body.

Pretty simple, right? You don’t need to overdo it when it comes to strong CTAs.

3. Start strong and be persuasive. 

Trust builds confidence and confidence leads to more customers. One way to build both with your audience is to inject social proof into your CTA. This could be your success stories, the number of customers you’ve worked with, or even some awards.

You can also build confidence with your audience by speaking confidently yourself. Capture their attention and don’t hesitate to be bold. Clearly state what you will deliver when the reader decides to continue.

In step one, you identified your desired outcome. Now is a great time to also ask, “What is their desired outcome?” A good CTA knows what a reader wants, offers it to them, and tells what they’re going to get out of it.

For example, if your goal is to build your email list, and you know your audience is looking to get fit for bikini season, you could write a blog post on the 7 exercises for a summer six-pack. Then include a call to action for a weekly detox or workout that helps your core, in exchange for your audiences’ email addresses.

4. Keep it simple.

A strong CTA is short and precise–you don’t need to write a long novel. A simple sentence no longer than 150 characters will do the trick.

Remember, clear always beats cute—this means no extra fluff should be attached to your CTA.  Your readers should very clearly understand how to move forward and what will happen by doing so.

At the end of the day, simple, direct, and clear CTAs perform the best. Using words that express urgency, like “now” and “today,” also work great at incentivizing people to move forward quickly.

Don’t reinvent the wheel, use what is working.

If you get stuck trying to write CTAs, take a look at your competitors and analyze what approach they’re using. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes and ask yourself which one you would click on. Then, implement those CTA tactics across your content.
